The birth of Jesus and the birth of John are closely connected. God was
sending His Son. He was also sending His prophet. The prophet should not
be exalted too highly. His purpose is to exalt the Saviour. As we read
about Mary, Elizabeth and Zechariah, we see that each of them gave
glory to the Lord. "Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit" (Luke
1::41). "Mary said, My soul praises the Lord's greatness" (Luke 1:46).
"Zechariah began to praise God .... Zechariah was filled with the Holy
Spirit and prophesied" (Luke 1:64-67).
