“The day of the Lord is near … The day of the Lord is going to come. It
will be a cruel day with fury and fierce anger. He will make the earth
desolate. He will destroy its sinners. Its time has almost come. Its
days will not be extended” (Isaiah 13:6,9,22) – what solemn words of
warning regarding divine judgment! Is there hope for anyone? Isaiah 14
speaks of the fall of Lucifer (Isaiah 14:12-17). Lucifer, also known as
Satan or the devil, has fallen, and He’s determined to take us down with
him. He has caused havoc on earth. In the face of his evil
attacks, God’s people need this Word of encouragement: “The Lord has laid
Zion’s foundation … His humble people will find refuge in it” (Isaiah
14:32). This dual perspective – judgment and salvation – is also found
in Isaiah 15. There will be “wailing”, but there will also be
“survivors” (Isaiah 15:8-9).
