The Kingdom Of God: 1 & 2 Timothy and Titus

We begin with some great verses from Titus - "Jesus Christ ... gave himself for us to redeem us from all iniquity and to purify for himself a people of his own who are zealous for good deeds" (Titus 2:13-14); "He saved us, not because of deeds dine by us in righteousness, but in virtue of his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit" (Titus 3:5). There are kings who need to be prayed for (1 Timothy 2:1-2), and there is the King to whom we offer prayer (1 Timothy 1:17). To understand the nature of God's kingdom, we must understand the character of the king. God's kingdom contrasts with the kingdoms of men. (a) Kings are "in high position" (1 Timothy 2:2), but "the king of ages" is in the highest position of all. (b) The kingdoms of men last for a time, but "the king of ages" is immortal. (c) The kingdoms of men display great outward show, but "the king of ages" and his kingdom works in...

God's Word - Unchanged, Unchanging, Unchangeable

Some people say, “Surely, you don’t believe the Bible.” They say that the Bible belongs to the past. It’s not for us today. This kind of talk takes us right back to the Garden of Eden – “Did God really say?” (Genesis 3:1).   The Bible says that “all Scripture is given by inspiration of God?” (2 Timothy 3:16).   Who are we to say that the Bible needs to be rewritten – so that it only says what we want it to say to us? God hasn’t stopped speaking to us through His Word – but have we stopped listening to Him?   * In our cynical world, we hear that “It doesn’t matter what you believe because what you believe doesn’t matter.” When we find ourselves starting to think like this, let’s remember this: God’s Word is unchanged .  * Sometimes, we look back over our life, and we think, “I used to love reading the Bible – but somewhere along the line, something’s changed.” What’s changed? Has God’s Word changed? No! It hasn’t changed. When our feelings chan...

God's Written Word - And His Living Word

"The Holy Scriptures are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus" (2 Timothy 3:15). In the Bible, we have God's written Word. The Bible points us to Christ. he is God's living Word - "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God ... The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth" (John 1:1,14). What do we learn as we read God's written Word? - This is what we learn: "Jesus loves me. This I know, for the Bible tells me so." God speaks to us His written Word so that we may come to trust in Christ, the living Word - "from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus" (2 Timothy 3:15). Reading the Scriptures, we become wise for salvation as we find Christ who is our Wisdom (2 T...

Holy Saviour, Holy Scriptures, Holy Spirit

2 Timothy 3:10-17 God comes to us in our Holy Saviour, through the Holy Scriptures and by the Holy Spirit. When God comes to us, in love, we are changed by His love. His love creates in us love for Jesus, God's Word and holy living. These changes in us come from the God of love. In love, He shows us how we are to live. He calls us back from ways that dishonour Him. He leads us into ways that will bring glory to Him.

Called back from the way of sin ... Called into the way of the Lord

"He  who is often rebuked,  and  hardens  his  neck, w ill suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy" (Proverbs 29:1). Sometimes, we need to hear words that we don't want to hear. We need a good telling-off. We need to be shown where we've gone wrong. Why? Does God want to humiliate us? No! He wants to lead us out of the wrong way and into the right way, out of the bitter way and into the better way, out of the way of pride and into the way of humility, out of the way that exalts ourselves and into the way that point away from ourselves to Him. Where does the word of rebuke come from? It comes from his love for us. He does not want us to miss out on his blessing. This is why He calls us back from attitudes and actions which will take us far away from the place of blessing in our hearts and lives. When we consider what God has to say to us, there is something we must never forget - While God's Word to us is, primarily, His Word of "salvation", th...

Lord, help us to be faithful to You ...

" But you have carefully followed my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, perseverance,  11  persecutions, afflictions, which happened to me  at Antioch,  at Iconium,  at Lystra—what persecutions I endured. And  out of  them  all the Lord delivered me.  12  Yes, and  all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.  13  But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.  14  But you must  continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned  them ,   15  and that from childhood you have known  the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. 16  All Scripture  is  given by inspiration of God,  and  is  profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instr...

Good News for this generation

"God, who at various times and  in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets,  2  has in these last days spoken to us by  His  Son ... " (Hebrews 1:1-2). This is more than the prophets speaking about God. This is God, speaking through the prophets. The prophets looked forward to Jesus, God's beloved Son. God speaks to us through Jesus. "I am the good shepherd; and   I know My  sheep, and   am known by My own.   15  As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father;   and I lay down My life for the sheep.   16  And   other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice;   and there will be one flock  and  one shepherd" (John 10:14-16). Jesus, the Good Shepherd, tells us that his sheep will hear his voice. How are we to hear his voice? How are we to listen to him? We listen to him when we pay attention to his words. The...

Praying Through God's Word: 2 Timothy

2 Timothy 1:1-2:7 Lord, we’re not to keep Your Word to ourselves. You’ve given us the “Gospel.” Help us to share it with “faithful” people who will “pass it on to others” (2 Timothy 1:11,13 & 2:2). 2 Timothy 2:8-3:9 Help us, Lord, to “remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead” (2 Timothy 2:8). Jesus is the living Lord.  Help us never to forget this. When we’re tempted to forget Him, help us to remember why He died. “He died that we might be forgiven. He died to make us good, that we might go at last to heaven, saved by His precious blood.”When we’re tempted to forget Him, help us to remember that He’s alive today – and He lives in us. Help us to say, in our hearts, “I must decrease. Christ in me must increase” (John 3:30). 2 Timothy 3:10-4:22 We thank You, Lord, for “the Holy Scriptures which are able to make us wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 3:15). Help us to “preach the Word” in the power of “the Holy Spirit” (2 Timothy 4...
