On our way to the future

“Then Jesus quoted passages from the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining what all the Scriptures said about himself” (Luke 24:27).
Jesus goes back to the past – but he doesn’t remain in the past. He shows us how the past leads on to the future – from “Moses and all the prophets” to Jesus. We learn from the past – but we’re not locked in the past. Jesus was the future towards which the Old Testament pointed. He is the future towards which the New Testament points. The Old Testament said, ‘He will come.’ The New Testament tells us that he has come – and it, also, tells us that he will come. We look back with heartfelt thanksgiving – Thank you, Lord, for what you have done. We look forward, with hope and trust, to what the Lord will do – he tells us that he is “coming”, and we say, “Come, Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20).
